Schematic capture or schematic entry (SCM) is a step in the design cycle of electronic design automation at which the electronic diagram, or schematic of the designed electronic circuit is created by a designer. This is done interactively with the help of a schematic capture tool also known as schematic editor.

In a way, schematic entry is the very first step of actual design of an electronic circuit. Therefore schematic entry is said to be a front-end operation in the design flow.

The design of a schematic layout is usually done in a Schematic Editor, such as OrCAD, that shall represent the CAD system used in practical applications related to this course.
