1. Fabrication of a flat panel display

The principle of displays with liquid crystal is quite simple. TFTs (thin film transistors) are similar to MOSFETs, and control each pixel of the formed image. The liquid crystal has the property that it changes the light absorption properties when an electric field is applied. The electric field is actually controlled by the TFT.

First a polarizer is connected to the glass substrate. The TFTs are then fabricated directly on glass and then connected one by one to the driving circuitry which controls the TFTs. Try to describe a typical process flow for a TFT, considering that it is very similar to a CMOS. Try to keep in mind that all the processing takes place on glass, and the glass melts at very high temperature > 600oC. The TFT shown below is a bottom-gate TFT (inverted: metal below, then gate dielectric, then the Si channel)
